1. The Oscars
It’s hard not to talk about the Oscars today. But we’ll be playing particular attention to the Writing (Adapted Screenplay) category. The nominees are:
- The Descendants
- Hugo
- The Ides of March
- Moneyball
- and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy
Will the adaptation of children’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabaret get the gold man? Does it have any chance of taking the award for Best Picture? (Survey says: not likely.)

2. Gone to go on screen?
There are a lot of hurdles when it comes to making a film. A lot. But Michael Grant’s Gone has just cleared a few more of them:
3. Dromkeen collection to be housed at the State Library of Victoria
At the annual Dromkeen Dinner on Saturday it was announced that Scholastic Australia, trustee of the Dromkeen National Centre for Picture Book Art, is gifting the collection to the State Library of Victoria.
‘We are delighted to accept this important national collection. It is wonderful that it is being given to the Library during the National Year of Reading. The Library will build and exhibit the collection, support research and continue programs to engage young people in the Library and on-line. In this way we will maintain the vision of Courtney and Joyce Oldmeadow, and Scholastic as Trustee, and work to support literacy amongst young people.’
- The Hon John Cain, President of the Library Board of Victoria
4. It’s all happening in Perth
The Perth Writers Festival has just wrapped up. You can check out all the goss on twitter via the hashtag #pwf.
We’re loving all the photos appearing, like Oliver Phommavanh’s.

5. Get creative with Love and Devotion!
Aspiring teen writers should check out this week long workshop we are running with YA author Leanne Hall. Each day inspiration will be drawn from the beautiful manuscripts and images in the Love and Devotion exhibition, and an industry guest will give the inside scoop.
Last week Hardie Grant Egmont celebrated 10 years of publishing books kids love. We wish them many more years to come!
