CYL at Melbourne Writers Festival

The Centre for Youth Literature is an official partner of the Melbourne Writers Festival (MWF), and our team had a great time helping out with the Schools’ Program events. We got to:

  • meet Maggie Stiefvater,
  • find out why Nick Earls, Kate Grenville, and Maggie Stiefvater read,
  • go on a Galactic Adventure with Tristan Bancks,
  • hear about sporting heroes from Michael Panckridge,
  • watch Alice Pung grow up Asian in Australia,
  • explore the homes and families of Sally Rippin and Gabrielle Wang,
  • go to Washington with Penny Tangey,
  • explore Meredith Costain’s Girl Hell,
  • play storysports, and follow Brian Faulkner on his Project,
  • follow Briony Stewart into the dragon den,
  • draw stories with Mandy Ord,
  • and find out just how big a Con-nerd Oliver Phommavanh really is.

We also got the chance to interview Maggie Stiefvater (part one, part two), and Emily Rodda (coming up on insideadog). The theme for this year’s MWF was stories unbound and there were certainly plenty of stories flying free across all events, from Oliver Phommavanh talking about influences and inspirations including Andy Griffiths and Sonic the Hedgehog, to Alice Pung describing how you can’t stand up against the love of your family. We can’t wait to see what next year’s festival will bring!
